How to choose between pocket sprung, hybrid and memory foam without guessing.
The three types, honestly
Pocket sprung
Individually wrapped springs, so one side moves without the other. The more springs, the more closely the mattress follows your shape. Ours run from 1000 to 3000.
Choose it if you want support that feels like support, you sleep hot, or you share a bed with someone restless.
Memory foam
Foam that softens with body heat and moulds to you. Excellent at taking pressure off hips and shoulders, and silent when someone turns over.
Choose it if you have joint pain or sleep on your side. Avoid it if you overheat at night; foam holds warmth.
Hybrid
Springs underneath, foam on top. The springs carry the weight and keep air moving, the foam takes the pressure points.
Choose it if you cannot decide. It is the safest answer for most people and the one we sell most of.
Common questions
Firmer is better for my back, isn't it?
Not necessarily. A mattress that is too firm leaves a gap under the small of your back, which is exactly what people are trying to avoid. Support means the spine stays in a straight line, and for most people that is medium to medium-firm.
How often should I turn it?
Every three months for the first year, then twice a year. Rotate head to foot as well as flipping, unless it is a one-sided mattress, in which case rotate only.
Do I need a new mattress with a new bed?
Only if yours is more than about seven years old or you can feel the springs. A good mattress on a sagging base fails early, though, so if your old base is tired, replace both.
Can I try one?
In the showroom, yes. Ten minutes lying on it in your normal sleeping position tells you more than any description on this page.
